Paper 1 Shakespeare and the Nineteenth Century Novel

Students will read Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Frankenstein; a Modern Prometheus by Mark Shelley. They will explore the themes and characters of each text, as well as considering the contextual factors that may have influenced the writers and that may affect reception of the texts by different readers across time.

 

In the exam, students will analyse an extract from each text and refer to details from the texts in their entirety in response to the questions set.

 

Paper 2 Poetry and The Modern Novel

Students will read Animal Farm by George Orwell and the AQA Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology. They will also prepare to analyse a range of other poetry in preparation for the exam. They will explore the themes and characters of the texts, as well as considering the contextual factors that may have influenced the writers and that may affect reception of the texts by different readers across time. They will also develop the skill of comparing texts to each other, with reference to themes, ideas and writers’ methods.
